After graduating from Royal Military College in Kingston, Nigel commenced his career in the Signal Corps. The bulk of his career was spent within the Signals Intelligence realm helping to protect this nation from foreign aggressions during the Cold War.

Nigel was a family man. He would spend time cooking up tasty meals for family gatherings and would be careful to select just the right wine to accompany his creations. Nigel enjoyed spending time and puttering around at the cottage he designed and built at Lake Skootamatta. He was a handyman and there was little he couldn't fix. He was an avid sports fan having played many and coached some throughout his adult life. He was a loyal Toronto Maple Leafs fan and played goalie until at age 75 when he decided that he had pressed his luck far enough and donated his equipment. Being a man of many interests, he was a model railroader, a formidable bridge player and avid gardener. He was well known for his deep singing voice and was never happier than when he was singing with his various choirs. Nigel was a natural leader. Whenever something needed to be done, Nigel would soon find himself in charge. He was an adventurer at heart and loved travel. His military career took him and his family to some far flung places on the globe but Nigel always made the most of those assignments and introduced his family to his love of discovering new things. Some of his fondest memories were trips he took with his two sons to visit Civil War locations which he would research thoroughly ahead of time. Nigel always found time for charity work because he enjoyed helping others. Even though he has departed, his love continues to sustain us and the example of how he lived his life helps to light our way.

Donations can be made through the ALS Society Ottawa or Hospice Care Ottawa.

Signallers Club of Canadahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06393583695757047147noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8244320459439830488.post-27874555370434223692022-04-10T10:36:00.000-04:002022-04-10T10:36:02.246-04:00Obituary announcement for Club member Janik RJ(Bob) LM200 1938-2022
OBITUARY OF ROBERT JOSEPH JANIK

JANIK, Robert J. font-family: "Open Sans", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 22px;">It is with incredible sadness that the family of Murray Andrew Pletsch announce his passing on 18 February 2022, after an incredibly brave fight with Lewy Body Dementia. Murray leaves to mourn, his wife of 55+ years, Jackie, his daughter Stephanie Taylor (Rick), his son Michael (Wanda), and grandsons Isaac, Brennan and Matthew. He was pre-deceased by his beloved granddaughter Emily in 2013, his parents Melville and Hazel Pletsch, his sister Nancy Stratton and brothers Laurie and David. Remembered by his siblings Robert (Lena), Sheryl Norrie (Jim), Lois Gallant (Ephrem), and several nieces and nephews.
<p style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0.9); font-family: "Open Sans", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;">Murray proudly served in the Canadian Armed Forces for over 35 years, joining when he was only 16 years old as a Signalman Apprentice. He served in several locations in Canada as well as a 4-year posting to Germany with his family. Murray was also deployed to the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus. Another of Murray’s passions was genealogy. While posted to Germany, he hired a genealogist to trace back his ancestors. He spent immeasurable hours doing research and reaching out to distant family members to build an incredible record of his family.
<p style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0.9); font-family: "Open Sans", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;">Murray enjoyed fishing for trout, pickerel, and the ever-elusive Muskie. His children fondly recall heading out on early morning fishing trips that always included a stop at Tim Hortons for coffee and hot chocolate and a bag of day-old donuts. He also loved to speak about his Newfoundland acquaintances and loved a good Newfie joke. Coincidentally, both his of children married Newfies and he always enjoyed joking and bantering with them.
<p style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0.9); font-family: "Open Sans", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;">Murray fell in love with computers in the early 80’s and became the proud owner of a Radio Shack TRS-80 word processor. He was the computer guru that his kids and many people sought out to help troubleshoot their problems and to ask his recommendations on the best computers and software to buy. Naturally, Murray began to combine his genealogy passion with his love of computers. In addition to digitizing his vast genealogy records, he started his many year hobby of travelling around Northeastern Ontario, photographing headstones. He created the online Northeastern Ontario Gravemarker Gallery that had thousands and thousands of visitors over the years. Many people from all over the world reached out to him to thank him for the website and information that helped with their own genealogy. His website eventually became so popular, that volunteers stepped up from across Canada to take photos of their local cemeteries for his website and it then became known as the Canadian Gravemarker Gallery. Murray ran the website for 20 years until 2017 when he donated the millions of photographs from his website to CanadaGenWeb’s Cemetery Project.
<p style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0.9); font-family: "Open Sans", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;">In May 2005, Murray with the help of many volunteers founded the “Friends of Terrace Lawn Cemetery” and began a restoration project to beautify the grounds of Terrace Lawn Cemetery. Over $50,000 was raised and an incredible amount of work was completed which beautified the cemetery. A commemorative bench is in the cemetery which is dedicated to Murray. He was extremely proud of the accomplishments of the committee and was very moved with the bench dedication.
<p style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0.9); font-family: "Open Sans", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;">Murray had a sharp sense of humour and a mischievous twinkle in his eyes. Family was always most important to him, and he jumped at any occasion to host a family get together. Murray will be incredibly missed by his family and all who loved him. The family is requesting that no flowers be sent, but to instead donate funds to The Friends of Terrace Lawn Cemetery. Cheques may be made out to “The Friends of Terrace Lawn Cemetery” and can be mailed to Martyn Funeral Home, 464 Wyld St, North Bay ON P1B 1Z5. Another consideration is to donate to The Alzheimer Society of Canada.
<p style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0.9); font-family: "Open Sans", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;">The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the nursing staff in units D-3 and C-3 at North Bay Regional Health Centre and Dr. Roscoe for their compassionate care of our beloved husband and Dad.
Signallers Club of Canadahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06393583695757047147noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8244320459439830488.post-88293044626030281592022-01-23T10:35:00.001-05:002022-01-23T10:35:30.148-05:00Obituary announcement for Club member Pruner DF (Don) LM648 (Col Retd)
<span style="color: #111111; font-family: "Source Sans Pro", Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18px;">PRUNER, Colonel (Retired) Donald Frederick OMM, CD

<div class="details-body-copy set-font " style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: "Source Sans Pro", Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18px; font-stretch: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; line-height: 23px; margin-top: 24px; word-break: break-word;">At his residence on Monday, January 10, 2022, Donald Frederick Pruner age 96 years. Daniel started in the Black Watch division, transferred to the signal corps, mid-career and retired as a Sergeant in 1978. During his time with DND he had one tour overseas in Egypt on a peacekeeping mission.

Dan was an active member of the Debert Legion # 106 for 43 years. He always had a few kind words for everyone and will be remembered for some of his sayings; “Don’t forget to torment your neighbours”, “Get out of Dodge” and when asked by anyone if there was anything else he needed, his response would always be, “Just a few kind words.”

Daniel is survived by his wife of 60 years, Deanna Marie (Lewis); daughter, “Jo” Annette (Stephen) Williams, Tatamagouche; sons, Timothy (Wendy), Angevine Lake, Larry (Lisa), Debert; grandchildren, Melissa (Natalie), Amanda (Cory), Alex (Lisa), Spencer (Ashlee), Matthew (Ashlynn), Nicholas, Rebekah; great-grandchildren, Allura and Daniel; brother, Gordon (Carol); sisters-in-law, Sylvia and Iris.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, Jeremiah and Alfred.

A special thank you goes out to the VON and Palliative Care staff for their assistance in helping the family fulfill Gramps’ wish to die at home. Al attained the rank of Chief Warrant Officer in 1981 and in 1988 took his release after serving his country faithfully with honour, diligence and integrity for 36 years. His decorations and medals include Canadian Forces Decoration (CD) with 2 Clasps, Canadian Centennial Medal 1967, UN Emergency Force (UNEF), UN Emergency Force Middle East (UNEFME), Canadian Peace Keeping Service Medal, Special Service Medal (NATO) and the Parachute Badge. Al retired with his wife at their home in Truro. Al travelled the world and was not afraid to try anything and made friends wherever he went. He was a very caring person and a true family man – a husband, father, grandfather and soon to be great-grandfather – always giving and never asking for much in return except friendship and respect. Remembered for his love of the outdoors, especially being on the water, Al delighted in angling of all sorts, but especially fly-fishing for salmon on his beloved Margaree River. Al curled and played and coached hockey well into his 40’s until a knee injury prevented him. He was a long-time ham radio operator with the call sign “VE1 BLB”. Al actively volunteered in his community with the Knights of Columbus KOC (4th degree) where he served as Grand Knight and was a long-time member of Immaculate Conception Parish. He served as past president of the Cobequid Salmon Association and an Area Director of the Nova Scotia Salmon Association. He enjoyed spending time with his lifelong friends, Walt Conrad and John Stears recounting their hunting, fishing and military adventures with a great sense of humour and a kit bag full of stories and one-liners to tell. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family, especially grandchildren, Alex and Morgan, who were both the apple of their Papa’s eye. Al is survived by his wife of 61 years, Elisabeth “Ellen” (Schüttler); son, Patrick (Tanya), Marion Bridge; daughter, Susan (Hass), Riyadh, Saudi Arabia; brothers, Jerry (Karen), Kenebecasis, N.B.; Ernie, Reserve Mines; sister, Brenda (Nelson, deceased) Borgal, Glace Bay; grandchildren, Alexander (Ashley), Guysborough and Morgan (Emily), Marion Bridge; brothers-in-law, Franz Joseph (Heidi) Schüttler, Arnsberg, Germany and Hans (Gabrielle) Hildebrand; and sister-in-law, Maria Lindemann-Posner of Darmstadt, Germany; and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Al was predeceased by his uncle and godfather, Carl (Collie) Young (of Reserve Mines); brothers, Joe (Jean deceased) (Glace Bay); John (Helen) (New Glasgow) and sister-in-law, Monika St. Laurent (Darmstadt, Germany). Dad also leaves behind his special little buddy, B.B. who is now brightening the lives of all who visit at home. We would like to thank Dr. Trevor Locke, Today’s Nurse, especially Dad’s favourites, Samantha and Sharon and Wynn Park Villa 3E staff for their compassionate care until his passing. In keeping with Al’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Family and friends are invited to a Royal Canadian Legion Branch 26 Tribute Service followed by a Knights of Columbus Prayer Service and Liturgy of the Word on Saturday, November 27th beginning at 2 p.m. in Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro. Father Dariusz Miskowicz officiating. In accordance with current COVID-19 restrictions, proof of full vaccination, wearing of masks, as well as ID are required. Burial will take place in Cape Breton at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Al’s memory to Operation Smile or World Vision Canada. Webcasting of the service will begin at 1:58 p.m. (Atlantic Time) and is available along with online condolences at: <a href="http://www.colchestercommunity.com/" rel="nofollow" style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #34394c; font-family: "Fira Sans", Roboto, -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, "Segoe UI", "Helvetica Neue", Arial, "Noto Sans", sans-serif, "Apple Color Emoji", "Segoe UI Emoji", "Segoe UI Symbol", "Noto Color Emoji"; font-size: 17.6px;" target="_blank">www.ColchesterCommunity.com
Signallers Club of Canadahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06393583695757047147noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8244320459439830488.post-56881183792799449742021-11-22T20:15:00.007-05:002021-11-22T20:16:59.117-05:00Obituary Notice for Old Comrade Harris Basil "Harry" Vaughan
Vaughan, Harris Basil "Harry", CD (Sgt. Out of high school Don went into an officer’s training program with the “Royal Canadian School of Signals”. It was during this time in Kingston that Don met a beautiful young nurse named Faye Delaney from Gananoque and they married in 1958. Don returned to school and graduated with Honors from Queen’s University with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He quickly became an accredited Professional Engineer – PEng – the designation of which was a source of pride his entire life. Don had a diverse employment history. From CIL in Kingston to Syncrude in Fort McMurray in the early days of the oil sands development. Then off to Falconbridge in the quaint little mining town of Onaping in Northern Ontario. Then in 1976 back to his roots in Acton as he accepted a promotion to Indusmin head office in Toronto. But certainly, Don was best known as the Founding President and General Manager of "the olde Hide House" in Acton, and as the principal designer/builder of Blue Springs Golf Club. Don cherished the fact that he was able to make his mark on his hometown – a community with which he had felt a deep connection and that had given him so much.
<span style="background-color: white; color: #626262; font-family: "Open Sans"; font-size: 14.4px;">It is impossible to overstate the appreciation we have for the staff at A.R. He was the eldest of six siblings: Vera (deceased), Daisy, Judy, Keith, and step-brother Blaine. He attended school in New Glasgow and Little Harbour. In 1954, Dan joined the Canadian Forces as a radio operator in the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals. He served with the UNEF in 1956-57 during the Suez Crisis. On return to Canada, Dan married his love, Rosalie (Cotton). They had sons Daniel Joseph Jr. and Sheldon Richard before being posted to Europe with NATO in 1959. During their time in Europe, Dan and Rosalie used the opportunity to travel and explore. Dan’s stories of their adventure often transported friends and co-workers back to that exciting time. In 1962, Dan and Rosalie returned “home” and had several postings in Canada. Daughter Pamela Jane was born in 1969. This was immediately followed by a posting to Edmonton, where Dan served with the Airborne Regiment. Dan’s final posting was to CFB Shilo, where he “retired” (1979) with the rank of warrant officer. Dan started a second career with the Brandon Sun and became very involved in the Brandon community. He was an avid golfer, and eventually convinced Rosalie of the joys of the game. Together they joined as members at Glenn Lea golf course, where they participated in league play, and spent many hours enjoying the game with friends and family. Dan was also an active member of the Riverview Curling Club. An amateur radio enthusiast (VE4CA), Dan was always quick to help with an antenna installation, or enjoy a field day with the club. In 2000, Dan looked up the true definition of retirement and left the Brandon Sun, which was followed by many years of Caribbean adventures with Rosalie, before settling on driving to Mexico every year, when it got “too cold for golf at home”. Dan and Rosalie shared their faith with the community at St. Matthew’s Cathedral. Sadly, Dan’s love, Rosalie, passed away in 2009. His faith and love for his family allowed him to carry on without his constant companion and friend. Dan is survived by his children Dan Jr. (Jan), Sheldon (Lori), and Pamela (Terry); grandchildren Leslie (Andy), Kirsti (Kyle), Mary-Mac, and Lane; great-grandchildren Jordan, Nic, Alex, Walker, and Seraphim. He didn’t tell me how to live; he lived, and let me watch him do it. ~Clarence Budington KellandA memorial service will be held at St. Matthew’s Cathedral, 403-13th Street, on Monday, November 23, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Dan may be made to the Brandon Regional Health Centre Foundation, “Palliative Care”, 150 McTavish Avenue East, Brandon, Manitoba, R7A 2B3.Messages of condolencemay be placed at www.brockiedonovan.com.

Signallers Club of Canadahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06393583695757047147noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8244320459439830488.post-79224904110830890822021-09-18T20:23:00.007-04:002021-09-18T20:23:37.111-04:00Obituary notice for Club Member Chaters JG " Jack " LM695
<span style="background-color: white; color: #626262; font-family: "Open Sans"; font-size: 14.4px;">CHATERS, JOHN GEORGE "JACK"
<span style="background-color: white; color: #626262; font-family: "Open Sans"; font-size: 14.4px;">On Tuesday, October 29th, 2019 at the Brockville General Hospital Charles Street Site Jack Chaters peacefully entered into rest at the age of 84 years.
