Obituary announcement for old comrade Larry Joseph Bartlett (Sgt ret'd)

LARRY JOSEPH BARTLETT (Sergeant (Ret’d) Lineman of 22 years currently employed as a Civilian at CFB Borden MLS, pictured as a MCpl.) passed away peacefully at Hospice Simcoe in Barrie on Friday, September 9th 2016 at the age of 51. This man was a…Brother. This man was a…Father. This man was a…Husband. This man was a…Friend. This man was a…Veteran. God, please take good care…of this Man. Larry is survived by his beloved partner Cathy Pompilio, and his blended family of children Stephen, Megan, Conner, Amber and Melissa. Sadly missed by his Brothers Danny (Nancy) of St. Andrews NB, and Stephen (Sandi) of Calgary, AB. Lovingly remembered by his Nephews Jordan (Sue) and Nicholas (Stephanie) and Great Niece Chloe. Larry will be sadly missed by Cathy’s parents John and Judy Pompilio and sibling Wendy (Brian) as well as many family and friends. At Larry’s and the family’s request, cremation has taken place. Funeral service will take place at the Trinity Chapel-CFB Borden, 499 Dieppe Road P-152 Borden, ON on Saturday, September 24th 2016 at 1:00 pm. Reception immediately following at the Officers Mess (across from the Chapel). Larry will be intered alongside his Mom and Dad in St. Stephen, NB. Memorial Radio Truck

Memorial Radio Truck by C&E Branch This is posted on www.cmcen.ca website “Does anyone have a manual for this?” The more we searched the internet for information and twiddled knobs to make the equipment work, the more we realized that the equipment ‘know how’ and stories of the ‘Cold War’ and beginnings of ‘Peacekeeping’ were being forgotten. There were memorials and school projects for the World Wars and Korea but very few reminders to recall how Peace was kept, how the equipment worked or the lives of those dedicated to make it work. The aim of the Vintage Signal Team is to create a memorial that is mobile and can be taken into the schools and into Events. Our visitors can experience the equipment and learn the stories of the Signalers who kept the Communications ‘In and working’ throughout the Cold War and the many ‘Peacekeeping’ deployments. When the memorial arrives at the school or event the visitors will experience a little of a Signaler’s life as our trained volunteers show the equipment and share the tales from the memoriam book about the Rad Ops and tele type operators’ members whose names will be inscribed on a plaque in the cab. The truck presently under reconstruction is a CRTTZ variant. This was chosen because there are fewer members who remember how these trucks operated and it is more difficult to locate both memories and missing equipment. The sooner we complete the memorial, the better experience our visitors will have. It is with broken hearts that we the family announce the passing of Clarence "Sonny" Gray, on Wednesday, August 31, 2016 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Halifax, he was the son of the late Clarence and Cora (Rafuse) Gray. He served with the Armed Forces for 23 years until his retirement; he later was employed as a technician for 13 years and followed by being a commissioner for five years. He enjoyed spending time with family and being on the computer. Sonny is survived by his children, Terry Gray, Bob (Pam) Gray, Susan Gray (Joe) and David (Jolene) Gray; his seven precious grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; his sister, Joyce (James ) Lynch, as well as several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his loving wife of 57 years, Gloria (Hiscock) Gray, his two sisters, Marguerite and Carol. Cremation has taken place. Obituary notice in MEMORIAM - SANDRA BENDER ~ WIDOW OF THE LATE COLONEL JJ (JIM) BENDER (CELE(42B) RET'D)

With great sadness, I inform you that Sandra Bender passed away in Gananoque on 15 August 2016.  Sandra was the spouse of Colonel Jim Bender who died much too young in March 2003.  Sandra and Jim extended their hospitality to many of us when they were in Lahr in the 1975-77 time period.  Their daughter Samantha (Bender)  and her brother Jeff have advised that they are hosting a Celebration of Life on Saturday 3 September 1-4 PM for family and friends who wish to attend at Jeff’s home in Manotick (address below).  For those who may wish to do so, condolences can be sent to Jeff Bender’s address or email to Samantha and Jeff at sdbender@cogeco.ca

Obituary announcement for club member Ernest Ross Creed LM346

CREED, Ernest "Ross"It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Ross at the age of 86 on July 26, 2016 at the Ottawa General Hospital. Survived by his partner and best friend, Doreen McKee. Dear brother of Margaret Watson of Arizona. Uncle to Marlene Quirk (Paul) of Pontiac, Quebec, Betsi Skolaris (Fred) of Ohio, Joyce-Lee Horvath of New Mexico, Ed Creed (Wendy) of Winnipeg, Manitoba and many cousins. Predeceased by his parents, Jessie and Frank Creed; brother, Frank (Sonny) (Angie); nephew, Allan Creed of Springhill, Nova Scotia; and his sister, Joyce Chapman of Ohio. He will be remembered by his dear friend and caregiver, Richard Beck. Ross devoted his whole life to the military, 32 years as a proud member of the Royal Canadian Signals Corps and 30 years as a civilian with National Defence Headquarters. He was also a member of the NCO Sergeants Mess, and the Montgomery Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him and his jokes. Friends are invited to visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street (at O'Connor) on Sunday, July 31, 2016 from 2 - 4 and 7 - 9 p.m. A funeral service will be held in the chapel on Tuesday, August 2, 2016 at 2 p.m. In memoriam, donations to the Canadian Diabetes Association would be appreciated. Oral history interviews for KFPL StoryMe blog

Since 2012 Kingston Frontenac Public Library has been recording audio interviews with residents of Frontenac County and the City of Kingston for posting on our StoryMe blog at www.kfpl.ca/storyme .  Participants are asked to bring along an old photo or small object, which we scan and return immediately, to use as a talking point for the interview.  Those photos or artifacts may be of historical interest or just significant personally to the participant; we don’t ask that they relate specifically to the history of Kingston/Frontenac.  

Within a week of the interview each participant is sent online links to the interview so that they may share their reminiscences with family and friends.  The photos and audio interviews are published online in two places: first  an edited version of the interview, about three minutes long, is posted with the photo on the KFPL StoryMe blog and second, the photo and the complete interview, of whatever length, are posted on the Internet Archive at https://archive.org .  All the full-length interviews may be found at https://archive.org/search.php?query=storyme%20KFPL .

Until now we have recorded the interviews at a library branch or at community programs where the library has a presence, but recently we have been awarded a Seniors Community Grant to allow us to expand the program to seniors, particularly those outside of the City of Kingston.  Between July 2016 and February 2017 we will be able to visit long-term care homes and retirement residences and collect interviews from seniors who may be unable to come to a library branch.   We have already begun contacting activities directors at those facilities to schedule interviews with their residents.

We would also like to reach seniors who are not residents of such facilities and so we are contacting organizations and clubs who might have senior members.  My late father (William V. Hall) was a member of your club and so I thought of contacting you.  Would there be Signallers or Linemen in the City of Kingston or Frontenac County  who might be interested in participating?   Perhaps some would like to talk not just about their own family history but also (or instead!) about the early days of the Signals Corps and the Signallers’ Club.  We would be happy to send our interviewer out to a meeting or other activity to interview anyone interested.  All that is needed is a quiet spot where we can sit down one-on-one for twenty to thirty minutes, where we can minimize background noise on the recording – perhaps at the C & E Museum.  If participants are able to complete a copy of the attached Permission Form ahead of time we can quickly scan the photo or object, then settle down to an interview.  We can schedule more than one visit if there is enough interest.

I am attaching a copy of our brochure and Permission Form.  If you’d prefer I can send large-print versions.  I do hope we can include at least a few Signallers and Linemen in our StoryMe oral history program.
