Obituary Notice for James Edward Lankin (LM759)

Peacefully after a lengthy battle with cancer, at LHSC Victoria Campus on Wednesday July 6, 2011, James Edward Lankin (Ed) of London passed away in his 71st year. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Mamie. Loving father of Glenn and his wife Deb (Gabrielle) and his daughter, Susanne Goudswaard and husband Joe. Sadly missed by his granddaughters Emily and Maya Lankin. He is survived by his two sisters, Carole Boyd and her husband, Lawrence J Boyd and Barbara Friars and her husband Bill Friars of Harrow, Ontario. A special thank you goes out to the nurses of the palliative care and emergency units of LHSC Victoria Campus. Proud and devoted grandfather to Shawn, Adam and William. Dear son of Catherine (nee Skeans) and James J. Kiely. Caring brother of Richard (Marion Meehan), Ann (Harris Young), Margaret (James Britten), Rita (Joseph Howe), James (Thelma Gallant), Noreen, Marie (George Coughran) and loved by numerous nieces and nephews. William was a proud and decorated veteran, generous beyond compare, compassionate, loving, and a storyteller with no equal. He will be missed by all who had the great pleasure to know him. Obituary Notice for Glen Megaffin Bright (Sig Club)

86 of Bridgewater, passed away June 8, 2011 in South Shore Regional Hospital. Glenn was the son of the late Stanley and Irene (Megaffin) Bright. Born in Baljennie Saskatchewan August 17, 1924. He served in the Canadian Armed Forces in The Royal Canadian Corp of Signals from 1943 - 1979 and in French-Indo China (Vietnam) July 1954 - August 1955. He retired as Chief Warrant Officer to Regina Saskatchewan but returned to live in Bridgewater in 1983. Glenn was a past member of the Lions Club, Kiwanis Golden K, Legion, Signalers Club of Canada and Osprey Ridge Golf Club. He is survived by his loving and loyal wife Liz (Hebb); son, Greg (Fran) Bright, Oakville ON; daughter, Beverley Bright (Marty Coshman), Ottawa; one grandson, Aaron (Vanda) Bright, Toronto, ON; one granddaughter, Jodi Bright, Mississauga ON; sisters, Shirley Miller, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan; Mel (Ted) Turner, Regina, Saskatchewan; brothers, Jim (Jane) Bright, Edmonton, Alberta; Wayne (Carol) Bright, Rosetown, Alberta; several nieces and nephews; several sister and brother in laws. Glenn loved sports, especially golf, hockey and football. He will be remembered as being a very proud man and will be sadly missed by his family and his friend who knew him well. From Bob Shupe: With reference to Glen. When I first checked in with you folks on Ahern Ave. Halifax (Thelma K, Jerry Bellefontaine, etc) back in 1966 -67. Glen was a WO2 in CommGp. He was a WW2 vet. and had a chest full of ribbons similar to Bob Lackie.

Prior to the CommGp Hfx posting he was in Kingston at Sigs 2B or 2C. I recall him there when I was on my Gp3 crypto course in 1963. He was a proud Crypto Op. and very good at the trade. I believe he went from Halifax to Ottawa, and then back to 726 CommSqn on promotion to CWO around 1975-76. He retired from there in 1979 at age 55.

I got to work for him several times, and he was a great leader that mastered all the leadership styles, and he was always a gentlemen. That in itself was rare for a soldier of his time.

Glen was born in Sask. and was a career soldier. On retirement he and the missus moved back home. After a few years there he moved back to NS (approx. 1983) and built a home in Bridgewater. Over the years we would often have lunch, and I would always tease him about why NS won out as his retirement home.

He remained mentally sharp right to the end. He suffered a stroke about 2 yrs ago that set him back a little. However he quickly rebounded and was as sharp as a tack. About 2 months ago he became very weak, and he hospitalized. I visited with him every week, had a coffee, and yarn. He loved to talk soldiering, crypto trade, and all the good lads we both knew. During the past two weeks he failed quickly. I visited with him yesterday afternoon at 1500 hrs. and I could tell the life force was leaving him. On departure I said get strong Glen, and see you soon. He responded "I'm trying hard Bob!" He passed away later that evening.

I shall miss his presence. He was a great man.

Daniel Laurence Smith May 5th 1937-May 31st 2011

Dan passed away suddenly with his loving family by his side. Dan was survived by his loving partner Patsy, his son Steve (Heather) and daughter Shelly (Tony). He was also survived by, 7 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, 4 brothers and sisters and numerous nieces and nephews.

Dan was born in Ottawa, joined the military at 16 and married Laura, the mother of his children. He moved to Campbell River in 1972 and worked for BC Tel. Since retiring Dan spent many hours doing what he loved the most; family, camping, golfing, gardening and traveling.

Celebration of Life @ 1:00pm on June 10th at the Legion.

Dan was larger than life and there are truly no words to capture his essence.

Russell, Harry A (CWO) Born in Chatham NB on 04 Dec 1926 passed away in Fredericton NB on 18 May 2011, Harry served during the Second World War with RCNVR from 1944 to 1946 demobilized the re-enlisted in the Army and was posted to Royal Canadian Signal Corps in Kingston and retired in 1980. During his service his posting were: 1953/54 Cdn Comm. Z Dets in Kure Japan, 25 CIB Sigs, CMMFE Tokyo Japan, 1958/59 MCCD Vietnam (Indo-China) 1961 57 Cdn Sigs Unit (ONUC) Congo, 1974 Chief ComOp HQ UNEF Cairo. His decorations were Burma Star, CVSM & Clasp, War Medals 1939-45, ONUC (Congo), UNEF (Cairo) ICSC (Indo-China) CD & Clasps

During his school years Harry joined the Army Cadets and took training at Camp Utopia in New Brunswick. After finishing High School in Chatham in 1943 he tried to enlist in the Air Force but was too young. In 1943/44 he worked for #10 Air Observer School, in the meantime he enlisted in RCNVR and was called for duty in 1944. While serving in the RCNVR his duties were in the Atlantic, the North Sea, the Mediterranean Sea, the Indian Ocean to India and Ceylon, through the MALACCA Strait clearing mines to Singapore then on to the Philippine Islands, Formosa Island and to Hon Kong until the war was over. Sailed to Wake Island then went on to the Hawaiian Islands where the shore was undertaken (seeing Pearl Harbour etc.) Then return to Canada (Esquimalt BC) for leave and demobilization in 1946.

Re-enlisted in the Army in 1946 and posted to Royal Canadian Signals Corps in Kingston Ontario from 06 Dec 1946 to 12 August 1948. In summer 1948 a shot posting to East Comd Sigs then posted to NB Area Sigs Tp from Aug 1948 to 23 Jul 1950. From 24 Jul 1950 to 04 Sep 1953 1 Army Sig Sqn in Ottawa Ontario.

From Sep 1953 to Sep 1954 posted to Japan/Korea while overseas was attached to Cdn Comm. Z Dets BCFK Kure, 25 CIB Sigs Tp, CMMFE Tokyo Japan returned to Canada and posted to East Ontario Sig Sqn (Kingston On) from 1954 to 1958, while in Kingston was attached to HQ East Ont Area (I Staff Trg) Signals Comms and Morse Code etc, to Army Cadets and Schools in Eastern Ontario Area.

Nov 1958 to Nov 1959 posted to MCCD Indo-China (Saigon) returned to Canada and posted to 1 Army Sig Sqn until May 1961 then posted to 57 Cdn Sig Unit (ONUC) Congo stationed in Elizabethville and opened station in Bukavu, returned to Canada and posted to 1 Army Sig Sqn in Ottawa until May 1963 then posted to Alta Sig Sqn Edmonton until July 1966, while in Edmonton was promoted to Master Warrant Officer.

1966 posted to NB Sigs Sqn Fredericton as QMS WO II (SSM) closed out NB Sigs and moved to CFB Gagetown CommDet (724 Comm. Sqn) from Jan 1967 to Jun 1973

1973 posted to HQ 73 Comm. Gp Winnipeg Manitoba (Comm. Supt) supporting stations in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. In Feb 1974 posted to HQ Canadian Contingent UNEF Middle East (Cairo HQ)

Harry was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 4 Fredericton, The Blue Helmets (Peacekeepers) and a volunteer with the Red Cross Canvassing and Diabetes Foundation.

The Funeral service will be held from Bishop's Funeral Home, 540 Woodstock Road Fredericton on Tuesday 24 May 2011 at 11:00 A.M. with Father Monte Peters officiating followed by a Legion Tribute Service. There will be no visitation prior to the funeral
