It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Ray on June 7th, 2013.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of Phillip and Mildred (Burke).
Ray had served in the Canadian Armed Forces for 24 years and he was a Broker with Allstate Insurance for 23 years. In recent years, he was a Broker for the Open Skies Offroad Insurance Program.
Ray was always willing to give a helping hand to those who needed it. He was a volunteer driver for the Celtic Colours Festival and also volunteered yearly with the setting up of the Luminaries at Victoria Park for the Canadian Cancer Society Relay for Life. Ray himself was a Cancer Survivor.
Ray had a love for the outdoors and a strong passion for the sport of ATVing. His contribution to the sport of ATVing was indeed tremendous. He was a founding President of the National ATV Association AQCC. Ray was the first Executive Director for the All Terrain Vehicle Association of Nova Scotia. His commitment to ATVANS spans many years, countless meetings and thousands of miles. He was instrumental in introducing many changes on behalf of the sport safety of ATVing in Nova Scotia. Ray was also active in the Isle Royal and the Glace Bay Marconi Trail Blazer's ATV clubs. He always enjoyed his outings and the friendships developed with his fellow members.
Raymond is survived by his loving wife Almina Gouthro of 53 years, son David Timothy (Ontario), daughter Monique Cecile (Dave), son Timothy James (British Columbia) and grand-daughter Ashley Kachuba (Ontario) also sisters Victoria (Ronnie-Deceased), Velma (Angelo), Dolla (Paul), Myrna (Larry), adopted sister Debbie (Paul) also brothers Basil (Evelyn), Michael (Anne) all living in Ontario and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Ray was predeceased by his brother John and sister Lois.
There will be no visitation and cremation has taken place under the care of Forest Haven Cemetery per Ray's request. A memorial mass will be held at St. Margaret of Scotland in Grand Mira on Thursday June 13th, 2013 at 11 a.m. with Fr. Paul MacGillivary officiating, followed by a reception at Parish Hall. Internment will be at St. Margaret Cemetery.
Donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Cancer Society, St. Margaret Cemetery or charity of choice.
