Obituary notice for Old Comrade Joseph Ray "Dan" Martel (1938-2021)

Martell, Joseph Ray Daniel “Dan”, Age 83, Debert, passed away peacefully on November 27, 2021, at home, as per his wishes, surrounded by his family and devoted wife of 60 years, Deanna.

Born in Sydney, N.S., he was a son of the late John Raymond and Beatrice (Drover) Martell.

Daniel, affectionately known as “Gramps” or “Papa Bear” was a proud Cape Bretoner who had a 23 year career with the military. Daniel started in the Black Watch division, transferred to the signal corps, mid-career and retired as a Sergeant in 1978. During his time with DND he had one tour overseas in Egypt on a peacekeeping mission.

Dan was an active member of the Debert Legion # 106 for 43 years. Dan was also the author of the column “Legion Notes” in the Shoreline Journal, which he often closed with, “If you are enjoying your freedom, make sure you thank a veteran.” Dan was also a member of the Knights of Columbus.

Dan was a devout Catholic and family man and his family brought him extreme joy. Dan had many hobbies, of which he had collections of stamps, lapel pins, ball hats, coins, and hockey cards. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved his hunting and fishing. Birdwatching and feeding the birds was always a joy to him throughout his life. Dan was a big sports enthusiast who will always be remembered as an avid Toronto Blue Jay fan and a die-hard Maple Leafs fan.

Most importantly, Daniel will be remembered for his kindness to others and his fabulous sense of humour, which he kept until his final days. He always had a few kind words for everyone and will be remembered for some of his sayings; “Don’t forget to torment your neighbours”, “Get out of Dodge” and when asked by anyone if there was anything else he needed, his response would always be, “Just a few kind words.”

Daniel is survived by his wife of 60 years, Deanna Marie (Lewis); daughter, “Jo” Annette (Stephen) Williams, Tatamagouche; sons, Timothy (Wendy), Angevine Lake, Larry (Lisa), Debert; grandchildren, Melissa (Natalie), Amanda (Cory), Alex (Lisa), Spencer (Ashlee), Matthew (Ashlynn), Nicholas, Rebekah; great-grandchildren, Allura and Daniel; brother, Gordon (Carol); sisters-in-law, Sylvia and Iris.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, Jeremiah and Alfred.

A special thank you goes out to the VON and Palliative Care staff for their assistance in helping the family fulfill Gramps’ wish to die at home. Without their assistance, this would have been impossible.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Dan’s memory may be made to the Colchester East Hants Health Centre Palliative Care or some of Dan’s favorite charities: The Salvation Army, Soul’s Harbour, or the Canadian Wildlife Association.

A visitation will take place on Friday, December 3rd from 12 – 1 pm immediately followed by a Legion Branch #106 Service and a Memorial service, all in Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro, NS. Update On Colonel Don Pruner, OMM, CD

Members of the Communications and Electronics Branch/The Royal Canadian Corps of Signals

This note is intended to advise our C&E Branch members of the status of one of our genuine heroes – Colonel Don Pruner, OMM, CD. Colonel Don has been diagnosed with Acute Leukemia with a very short term prognosis.

Colonel Pruner served honourably in World War II as an infantry soldier in NW Europe in the Argyll and  Sutherland Highlanders of Canada (Princess Louise’s) and was Wounded in Action and medically  evacuated. After the war, he graduated from the University of Toronto with an Honours degree in the  Communications and Electricity option of Engineering Physics.

During his fourth year of engineering at university, he re-enlisted in the Canadian Army Regular in the  Royal Canadian Corps of Signals. Col Pruner served in the war in Korea in 1952 as both a battalion signal  officer and a signal troop officer at brigade HQ. During his thirty-four plus years of military service in the  Canadian Armed Forces, he was promoted and employed in progressively more responsible positions in  operations, management, training and administration, primarily, but not exclusively, in the field of  communications and electronics. In his final appointment, he was selected as Canadian Forces Attaché  in Israel with a secondary accreditation to Cyprus.

Colonel Pruner’s knowledge, experience and good humour were instrumental in the creation of the  integrated Communications & Electronics Branch based on the former RC Sigs, and telecommunications  components of RCEME, RCN, and RCAF that were the founding elements of the new Branch. As Chief  Instructor and A/Commandant at the Signals School during the transition from single service to an  integrated training establishment he and his colleagues were required to effectively and smoothly  recreate the trades, officer and NCO courses that would be responsive to the operational requirements  of the new Canadian Forces.

As Director General Communications and Electronics Operations (DGCEO) a few years later he was  responsible for the Communications & Electronics (C&E) plans and operations staff that would respond  to the readiness, deployment and operational support responsibilities of the Deputy Chief of Defence  Staff including the C & E component of the newly formed Joint Staff (J6). It was Colonel Pruner’s  extensive experience and professional approach to this challenge that guaranteed there was no  degradation in the communications and electronics support to operations. His efforts ensured that the  credibility and profile of our Corps/Branch was maintained and enhanced during this tumultuous period.

Colonel Pruner continues to remain active in supporting our C&E community. And he is often sought out for  his sage counsel and wide breadth of experience. He is always among the first individuals to provide  sponsorship to important Corps/Branch activities such as the building of our C&E Museum.

Colonel Pruner has dedicated his life to serving his country and his precious Royal Canadian Corps of  Signals/Communication and Electronics Branch. He has served courageously in WWII and Korea and in key  strategic and operational positions in the Corps/Branch. Most importantly, he has provided leadership to  several generations of young officers and soldiers by acting as a mentor and counsellor. Colonel Pruner  remains one of the original builders/designers of the C & E Branch. And he is a living example of a  dedicated, courageous, and devoted member of our RCCS/C&E Branch.

He enjoyed spending time with his lifelong friends, Walt Conrad and John Stears recounting their hunting, fishing and military adventures with a great sense of humour and a kit bag full of stories and one-liners to tell. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family, especially grandchildren, Alex and Morgan, who were both the apple of their Papa’s eye. Al is survived by his wife of 61 years, Elisabeth “Ellen” (Schüttler); son, Patrick (Tanya), Marion Bridge; daughter, Susan (Hass), Riyadh, Saudi Arabia; brothers, Jerry (Karen), Kenebecasis, N.B.; Ernie, Reserve Mines; sister, Brenda (Nelson, deceased) Borgal, Glace Bay; grandchildren, Alexander (Ashley), Guysborough and Morgan (Emily), Marion Bridge; brothers-in-law, Franz Joseph (Heidi) Schüttler, Arnsberg, Germany and Hans (Gabrielle) Hildebrand; and sister-in-law, Maria Lindemann-Posner of Darmstadt, Germany; and numerous nieces and nephews. Obituary notice for Club Member Dawkins DB "Don" LM704

 DAWKINS: Donald Barry

July 17, 1935 - March 2, 2019

It is with a mix of profound sadness and a few tearful sighs of relief that our family wishes to announce the passing of our beloved patriarch Donald “Don” Dawkins, after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s – a cruel and insidious disease.

Lovingly remembered by wife of 60 years Faye, sons Stephen (Maria) and David (Jennifer), brother Fred (Karin), sister-in-law Rosalee (Gary) and daughter-in-law Arta (Jamie). Predeceased by his loving parents William (Huck) and Helen – as well as his brother Gary, grandson Neal and son James Andrew (Jamie) ... all three taken away far too soon. Don’s legacy includes seven grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and a growing army of great grandchildren (4 and counting). Husband. Father. Brother. Papa. Great-Papa. Officer. Gentleman. Engineer. Entrepreneur. Citizen of the Year. Builder.

Don was born in Acton and excelled at sports during his teen years – especially football and track and field. Out of high school Don went into an officer’s training program with the “Royal Canadian School of Signals”. It was during this time in Kingston that Don met a beautiful young nurse named Faye Delaney from Gananoque and they married in 1958. Don returned to school and graduated with Honors from Queen’s University with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He quickly became an accredited Professional Engineer – PEng – the designation of which was a source of pride his entire life. Don had a diverse employment history. From CIL in Kingston to Syncrude in Fort McMurray in the early days of the oil sands development. Then off to Falconbridge in the quaint little mining town of Onaping in Northern Ontario. Then in 1976 back to his roots in Acton as he accepted a promotion to Indusmin head office in Toronto. But certainly, Don was best known as the Founding President and General Manager of "the olde Hide House" in Acton, and as the principal designer/builder of Blue Springs Golf Club. Don cherished the fact that he was able to make his mark on his hometown – a community with which he had felt a deep connection and that had given him so much.
It is impossible to overstate the appreciation we have for the staff at A.R. Goudie LTC in Kitchener. Their dedication has been beyond professional. Genuine love and care. Thank you. The same to Grand River Hospital (Freeport) staff who provided the palliative care for Don these past ten weeks. You are all angels.

The family will receive friends at MacKinnon Family Funeral Home,
55 Mill St. E., Acton on Sunday, March 10, 2019 from 2-4 p.m.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, March 11, 2019 at
Knox Presbyterian Church, 44 Main St. N., Acton at 2 p.m.
Cremation has taken place.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer’s Society or a charity of your choice, would be appreciated by the family.

Obituary notice for Club Member Connors DJ "Dan" LM455

July 24, 1936-Nov 16, 2015

Daniel was born in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, to Norbert and Roletta (Jones) Connors. He was the eldest of six siblings: Vera (deceased), Daisy, Judy, Keith, and step-brother Blaine. He attended school in New Glasgow and Little Harbour. In 1954, Dan joined the Canadian Forces as a radio operator in the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals. He served with the UNEF in 1956-57 during the Suez Crisis. On return to Canada, Dan married his love, Rosalie (Cotton). They had sons Daniel Joseph Jr. and Sheldon Richard before being posted to Europe with NATO in 1959. During their time in Europe, Dan and Rosalie used the opportunity to travel and explore. Dan’s stories of their adventure often transported friends and co-workers back to that exciting time. In 1962, Dan and Rosalie returned “home” and had several postings in Canada. Daughter Pamela Jane was born in 1969. This was immediately followed by a posting to Edmonton, where Dan served with the Airborne Regiment. Dan’s final posting was to CFB Shilo, where he “retired” (1979) with the rank of warrant officer. Dan started a second career with the Brandon Sun and became very involved in the Brandon community. He was an avid golfer, and eventually convinced Rosalie of the joys of the game. Together they joined as members at Glenn Lea golf course, where they participated in league play, and spent many hours enjoying the game with friends and family. Dan was also an active member of the Riverview Curling Club. An amateur radio enthusiast (VE4CA), Dan was always quick to help with an antenna installation, or enjoy a field day with the club. In 2000, Dan looked up the true definition of retirement and left the Brandon Sun, which was followed by many years of Caribbean adventures with Rosalie, before settling on driving to Mexico every year, when it got “too cold for golf at home”. Dan and Rosalie shared their faith with the community at St. Matthew’s Cathedral. Sadly, Dan’s love, Rosalie, passed away in 2009. His faith and love for his family allowed him to carry on without his constant companion and friend. Dan is survived by his children Dan Jr. (Jan), Sheldon (Lori), and Pamela (Terry); grandchildren Leslie (Andy), Kirsti (Kyle), Mary-Mac, and Lane; great-grandchildren Jordan, Nic, Alex, Walker, and Seraphim. He didn’t tell me how to live; he lived, and let me watch him do it. ~Clarence Budington KellandA memorial service will be held at St. Matthew’s Cathedral, 403-13th Street, on Monday, November 23, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Dan may be made to the Brandon Regional Health Centre Foundation, “Palliative Care”, 150 McTavish Avenue East, Brandon, Manitoba, R7A 2B3.Messages of condolencemay be placed at www.brockiedonovan.com.
