Obituary announcement for old comrade BGen (Ret’d) James A. Bruce, MMM, CD, MBA

It is with great sadness and a broken heart that we the family announce the passing of Brigadier General James “Jim” A. Bruce, MMM, CD, MBA on 28 February 2019.

Born in Surrey, British Columbia, Jim was the son of the late James A. and Pauline Bruce.

Jim joined the Canadian Armed Forces as a Boy Apprentice in the Signals Corps and when commissioned as an officer, joined The Royal Canadian Regiment and later transferred to The Princess Louise Fusiliers. He served a total of 54 years in uniform. He was the current Honorary Colonel of the Princess Louise Fusiliers Regiment having previously been their Honorary Lieutenant Colonel. He was also the Honorary Colonel of the 78th Highlanders (Halifax Citadel).

Jim lived an extraordinary life of service. He was invested into the Order of Military Merit for exceptional and meritorious service and received the Chief of Defense Staff Commendation for his action during a serious vehicle accident in which his actions saved lives. He was awarded three bars to his Canadian Forces Decoration, the Special Service Medal for service in Germany and the Silver Jubilee medal. Jim served three tours of duty in Germany with the 3rd Battalion a tour with 2 RCR in Gagetown, NB and was the Adjutant and Company Commander at the Infantry School. He also served in Western Canada HQ, Sydney Militia District HQ and Maritime HQ, Halifax. Jim was the Commander of 36 Canadian Brigade Group and the Land Forces Commander for the district of Halifax during Hurricane Juan and White Juan. His final service role was as the Deputy Commander of Land Forces Atlantic Canada (5th Canadian Division).

Jim married the love of his life and best friend Kathryn “Tabby” or” Kathy” Mae (Matheson) and together with Bootes lived an extraordinary partnership and set an example of love and respect to all who knew them. He was compassionate to a fault and mentored hundreds of leaders, always ready to offer guidance or his time freely. He was a past president of the Halifax Citadel and Halifax Army Museum and the current president of The Nova Scotia Branch of The Royal Canadian Association and a director of the National Association of The Royal Canadian Regiment Regimental Association. Jim was also a Director with the Army Cadets and enjoyed his time with the boys and girls serving with 117 Preston/Westphal RCACC.

Jim held a MBA from Cape Breton University and received the Governor General Gold Medal for academic excellence. He was a graduate of the Canadian Land Forces (Army) Staff College, the United States Command and General Staff College (Carlie) and the United Kingdom Royal Navy Staff College.

During Retirement, Jim joined SAIC and was their Eastern Manager and was a well-known expert in Emergency Management, Operational Planning and Evaluations, especially in the field of nuclear energy. He was the Chief Instructor of Public Safety Canada and developed the Emergency Management Cycle that guide all emergency planning and operations throughout Canada. Retiring for a third time, Jim was self-employed and formed a partnership with Atlantic Security Group. If you have ever travel to Newfoundland and Labrador, Jim was the key ingredient to making your ferry ride safe and secure and treasured his time working with the Marine Atlantic Inc team. Jim and Kathy travelled the world - Germany, France, England, Scotland, Ireland, Mexico, China and many, many other locations to discover new cultures, language, food and enjoy their time together.

Jim is survived by Kathy, many brothers, sisters, nephews and nieces from British Columbia to Cape Breton. He was extremely close to sister-in-law Glenda and Martin McDonough and their girls, Melissa (Brian) and their children, and Amy. Bootes is going to miss their daily walks and his chats with special neighbors and friends who supported him and Kathy over many years. Jim was predeceased by his brother in law, Donnie Matheson.

The family would like to thank Dr. Gordon Mahaney for his compassionate and care, the doctors and nurses at the VG Hospital, QE II and the Dartmouth General Hospital. You were always respectful, caring and attentive during this very difficult time.

A military celebration of life will be held at CFB Halifax Chapel (2710 Admirals Way Halifax NS B3H 4R2) on 05 March 2019 at 2:00pm and an overflow room has been coordinated at Juno Towers Officer Mess, Ward Room. Transportation has been coordinated from Willow Park Armoury, 3325 Husky Drive, Halifax (parking location) with a shuttle service from 12:00 and ending at 1:15. Return transportation will also be coordinated after the service and the reception.

The Family will receive friends at the Ward Room, Juno Towers following the service. Dress for military is uniform and medals. Special seating will be available for both his regiments.

Obituary announcement for old comrade MASTER WARRANT OFFICER KAREN WILLOUGHBY (NEE STERLING) (TEL OP 212 / COMM OP 213 RET'D)

Karen Willoughby (nee Sterling)

September 20, 1947 ~ March 4, 2019

Mrs. Karen Lee Willoughby (Sterling), beloved wife of Mr. Lee Willoughby of Lethbridge passed away on Monday, March 4, 2019 at St. Michaels Health Centre at the age of 72 years.

Karen was born in Melita Manitoba, on September 20, 1947 to Jean and Pat Sterling.  She completed school in Melita and moved to Winnipeg then Calgary where she took a key punch operator course.  Bored... she joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1967 as a Navy Radio Operator and was posted to Mill Cove N.S.

Karen realized the limits of being a Naval Radio Operator and changed trades to Teletype Operator.  Eager to see something other than a teletype machine she requested and was accepted as a flight attendant with the Canadian Forces.  She spent 4 years flying everybody, from the Prime Minister to the Queen of England, literally!  After returning from flying, bored again she volunteered for a UN posting in Egypt and was one of the first females to be accepted.  Upon returning she moved around and then got bored and volunteered to be the Senior Flight attendant and was again off flying.  After returning she was eventually posted to Penhold where she met Lee.  Lee was eventually posted to Colorado Springs and her to Goose Bay Labrador.  They decided this wasn't working too well, and Karen took her release to join Lee in Colorado, soaking in the hot tub, cutting grass, and chasing squirrels for the last two years there.  After Colorado they were posted to Vancouver and eventually Ottawa where they decided to call it quits and move to Lethbridge to be close to family.

Karen took a part time job at Safeway to keep busy in retirement and eventually retired from that to look after her beloved black lab "Mika”.  Her most memorable times she would say were definitely flying with the Royal Family and Prime Ministers and Governor Generals.  She enjoyed golfing curling and playing ball in her younger days.

The family cannot thank the nurses and staff at Palliative Care at St. Michaels enough, as well as Dr. Walsh and Vicky Dixon at Home Care for their devotion to Karen's wellbeing in her time of need.

Karen is survived by her husband Lee and Stepdaughter Jan (Chad) and their children, her mother Jean Sterling; sisters Patricia Downey and Ruth Zahrodney; brothers Bill (Cheryl) Sterling and Stephen (Darlene) Sterling, along with numerous nieces and nephews

Karen is predeceased by her father Pat Sterling and brother Robert Sterling, brothers in law Francis Downey, and Larry Zahrodney.

At Karen's request there will be no Service.  There will be a private Celebration of her Life in Melita Manitoba in the spring when she will be interred with her family.

Born August 16, 1941 in Vernon, B.C., passed away
 in Ottawa, Ont. January 30, 2019

Survived by his wife of 35 years Mana of Ottawa, 
sister Betty Lou (Jim) of Vernon, 
brother Ted of Kelowna, niece Janet and nephew Willie
 and their families. 
Also survived by cousins David, Jeanette, Linda, Fran, 
Gayle, Christine, David, 
Eva and  Joe (AKA “The Everitt Clan”) and their families
 and many great friends he met along the way.

Predeceased by his parents Ruby (nee Everitt) and 
Charles Roy.

While enjoying his time in the Army Cadets including 
several summers at the Vernon Army Cadet Camp John 
found his calling of service to his country,
 he left school at 17 and enlisted in the Canadian Army
 in the Signal Corp.  John transferred to the Canadian 
Foreign Affairs communications department. 
After 38 years of service John retired at 55 in Ottawa. John’s
 time in the army
 and foreign affairs took him to every continent 
except Australia including postings to the middle east,
 the Congo, Sweden, England, the Philippines and Thailand.

John had a great sense of humour, enjoyed life
 accumulating
 many stories that he loved to tell and nicknamed
 his buddies
 and family names like Peaches,
 Gumboot and the Brat to name a few. He will be
 missed by all who knew him.

A celebration of John’s life will be held later
 this year
 in Vernon, date and place
 to be announced when determined.

BLAIR C.D., Ross Archibald - Of Shedden, passed away on Wednesday, January 30th, 2019, at his residence, at the age of 85. Dearly loved husband of Delma Irene (Tankard) Blair and loved father of Rosalinda Blair (Jamie), Debbie Walker (Terry), Willie Blair (Sandy), Wendy Henry (Rick), Darlene Cunha (Duval) and the late Ross. Dear brother of Butch Dunham (Cathy), Nita Vanshepen (Henry), Judy Wilson (late Ron). Sadly missed by 12 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. Ross was born in Ottawa on May 9th, 1933, the son of the late George and Pearl (Reynolds) Blair. He served with the 9th Signal Corps during the Korean War. He was a member of the Legion, London. Ross retired as a Dean with the College of the Rockies. He had a Masters Degree in Engineering from the University of Waterloo and a Masters Degree with the University of Western Ontario. Ross’s wishes were for his donation to the Anatomy Department of the University of Western Ontario that it might help someone else. A celebration of life will be announced at a later date.
