SUTTON, Colonel Peter H., CD, (ret'd)

Loving husband, devoted father and grandfather Colonel Peter Sutton passed away August 24, 2019 in Kingston, Ontario, aged 86 years.

He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Audrey (nee Doerr), daughters Karen Sutton (Peter Heidinger) and Ann Hollett (Edward) and sister Ann Dunn. His life was enriched by five grandchildren: Bryan, Michael, and Eric Heidinger and Philip and Emma Hollett.

Colonel Sutton was the son of the late Dr. William D. Sutton and Mrs. Edna (Thompson) Sutton of London, Ontario.

The funeral service for Colonel Sutton will be held at Trinity Chapel, Canadian Forces Base Kingston on 27 August 2019 at 2:00 PM. Private interment in London, Ontario, will take place at a later date.

Colonel Sutton joined the Canadian Army in 1949. Commissioned in 1951, he held command and staff appointments including commanding officer of 1st Canadian Signal Regiment and Senior Staff Officer at Headquarters, Allied Forces North, in Oslo Norway. He attended the 1965 Australian Army staff college course and later served as directing staff, senior staff officer (plans), and assistant commandant of the Canadian Army staff college.

After retirement from the Canadian Forces, Colonel Sutton joined the Public Service of Canada and held senior positions with the Department of National Defence until his retirement in 1991.

Colonel Sutton was Colonel of the Regiment, 1st Canadian Signal Regiment from 1983 to 1988.

An active volunteer, Colonel Sutton was senior researcher at the Military Communications and Electronics Museum for 25 years. He was part of the team that produced a history of Canadian military communications for the 110th anniversary of the Communications and Electronics Branch in 2013. Colonel Sutton also volunteered with the Correctional Service of Canada as a mentor to inmates preparing for release.

The passing of John Donald Poulos, husband of the late Lenora
 (Campbell) Poulos, occurred on Wednesday, August 7, 2019 at
 the Dr. Everett ChalmersRegional Hospital. Born on August 17, 1939
 in Saint John, NB he was theson of the late John and Jenny
 (Winchester) Poulos. John joined the Army atthe age of 16 as
 a boy soldier and was a member of the Signal Corps. Following
 his service he joined the family business and caught the
 entrepreneurial bug, eventually opening several restaurants of
 his own. Hewas a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #93
, and a former member of Search and Rescue. John also taught
 firearm and hunter safety. A beloved father, brother and uncle,
 John enjoyed time spent with family andcruising in his convertible.
 He liked to play darts and cribbage he alsoenjoyed classical music.
John is survived by his sons, Peter  Poulos (Jennifer) and Stephen
 Poulos   (Cheryl); sister, Helena "Sister" Case; several nieces
and nephews. In addition to his wife and parents, John was
 predeceased by his sister, Joan Poulos, and brothers, Arthur
and William "Sonny" Poulos.

Visitation will take place on Sunday August 11, 2019 from 2 to 4
 and 7 to 9 pm at York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Dr.
 Fredericton, NB. There will be a Legion Tribute Service by
 Legion Branch #93 on Sunday, August 11, 2019 at 6:45 pm
 at York Funeral Home. A Private Graveside Service will take
 place at Erb's Cove Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers,
remembrance may be made to the Royal Canadian Legion

Notice of passing Larry Ferguson-Former Apprentice

News received from Ross Campbell,  that Larry Ferguson, former Apprentice passed away on 27 Jul 2019 in Germany. Larry had been attached on posting to 1SSM Bty in Germany, married a local girl and stayed in Germany on release.   Ross is pretty sure that Larry was the last Canadian Soldier in Deilinghofen where he was posted to Fort Prince of Wales. Many of the former RCA members of 1 SSM Bty remember Larry, he was always a good source of information and what was going on. He will be sorely missed.

Our hero has gone to join his angel – July 14, 2019

Born May 25, 1938 in Saint John, New Brunswick, Fred was the son of the late Edmund and Gladys Hulme (nee Rossiter). Fred was predeceased by his loving and loyal wife of 56 years, Heather Hulme (nee Moyse). He will be greatly missed by his five daughters, Lori Hulme, Sheri Leadston (Jeff), Tracey Naysmith (John), Tammy Hulme and Chantelle Bennett (Jim), as well as his thirteen Grandchildren; Christopher, Jordan (Jessica), Scott, Noah, Connor, Scott (Miranda), Madeline, Joshua, Ian, Heather, Alec, Shaun and Andrew and his five Great-Grandchildren Camden, Braxden, Lukas, Rohklin, and Willow. He is survived by his brothers, Joe McKinnon (Gayle), Kingston, Rick MacDonald (Karen), New Brunswick, John McKinnon (Maureen), Harold Kethro and Rob Gorham (Angie) all of Nova Scotia, and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his brother John Fredricks. Fred joined the Canadian Military as a young man and served 31 years in the signal corps. Along the way Fred made many friends and established a very large Military Family. Fred retired in 1986 and went on to open his own business which afforded him the time to follow his creative passions. Fred designed and created many beautiful and original pieces of furniture for his family, which will allow his legacy to live on and be passed down to future generations. The family wishes to thank the staff at KGH – Kidd 9 for their wonderful care. Cremation has taken place at Cataraqui Cemetery. Visitation will be held at JAMES REID FUNERAL HOME, 1900 John Counter Boulevard on Wednesday, July 17, 2019 from 2pm to 4pm and 7pm to 9pm. Funeral Service will be held in the chapel of the James Reid Funeral Home on Thursday, July 18, 2019 at 11:00am. Interment to follow at Cataraqui Cemetery. Reception at James Reid Reception Centre, all welcome. As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions in Fred’s memory may be made to UHKF (KGH – Oncology).

It is with profound sadness that we, the family, announce the sudden passing of our beloved husband and father, Frederick Arbuckle. He passed away peacefully on July 8, 2019 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital at the age of 94. 

Born August 25, 1924, he was a son of the late William Dickie and Nellie (Robertson) Arbuckle. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Frances (Hamilton) Arbuckle; sister, Betty Scott, Toronto; sister-in-law, Joan Arbuckle, Toronto. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, Norman, Jock, William, James, George, Robertson, Stewart and sisters, Janet, Susan, Agnes and Mary.

He was a beloved father of daughter, Heather (Stuart) Young of Maple Ridge, BC; son, Randy (Gigi) Arbuckle, Dieppe, NB and daughter, Colleen Arbuckle (Allan MacPhee), Westmount, NS. A wonderful grandfather to Patrick McGee (Stephanie Hirn), Fernie, BC, Margaret McGee (Tyson Visser), Surrey, BC, Marcella Arbuckle (Craig MacKay), Musquodoboit, NS, Sarah Gilmet, Glace Bay, NS, Cameron Gilmet, Grande Cashe, Alberta, Gabrielle Devine, Westmount, NS.; great-grandfather to Sway Hirn, Riley McGee, Theo Visser, Isla Visser and Ethan Frederick Gilmet, and uncle to many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

Freddie was employed for 10 years with the Dominion Coal Company (No. 24) until he joined the Canadian Armed Forces with the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals having served 25 years. His military career took him on many NATO and Peacekeeping missions, such as West Germany, Dec./’51 – Nov./’53; Korea, May/’54 – Nov./’54; Egypt, Oct./’57-Oct./’58; Belgium Congo, Mar./’62-Aug./’62;West Germany, Jan./’64-Feb./’64; UNFICyprus, Oct./’67-Apr./’68; West Germany, Jan./’72-July/’74 as well as coast to coast in Canada. On his retirement from the forces, he drove City Transit in Nanaimo, BC for two years, then drove the school bus with the Cape Breton District School Board for 12 years. 

Freddie was a member of the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals Association (Atlantic Division); a Charter member of the National Canadian Association of Veterans in United Nations Peacekeeping; a Charter member of the Canadian Association of Veterans in UN Peacekeeping (Major General Lewis MacKenzie Branch); a member of the Signallers Club of Canada, and a 40-year member of Branch 5, Royal Canadian Legion, Donkin.

Visitation will be held Thursday, July 11, 2019, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home and Reception Centre, 16 Reserve Street, Glace Bay. A funeral service will take place Friday, July 12 at 11 a.m. in St. Luke’s United Church, Donkin, with  Rev. Bob Biggar officiating. Cremation will follow with burial at a later date. DOUGLAS FRANK CROOKES

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, brother and uncle, Douglas Frank Crookes.
Doug will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by Anne Marie, his wife of 42 years, their children, Eric (Paula) and Susan, and his sister Susan, as well as many relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his father Alfred, mother Peggie, younger brother Stew, and father-in-law Eric Cormier.
Doug was born in Fort William, Ontario, on July 14, 1942. As his father was career military, they travelled a great deal through Canada and Europe. Doug joined the Army at 19, and spent 21 years in the Signal Corps. On his return to Canada in 1976, he was posted to Nanaimo, BC, where he met and married his sweetie pie Anne Marie. Their next posting was in Valcartier, PQ, where their kids, Eric and Susan were born. Doug's last posting was in Debert, NS where he retired as a sergeant. Eight months later he joined the RCMP as a civilian technician in Thompson, Manitoba. After 20 years the family moved to Winnipeg, where he retired.
Doug was always active with bowling, volleyball, softball, skiing and walking his dog. He loved family time, watching movies or playing board games. He was very involved with his kids' activities, including, scouts, bowling, skiing and St. John Ambulance.
He was a member of the ANAVETs (Army, Navy, Airforce Vets) for many years.
Doug and his family took many road trip vacations, where the trips were as much fun as the destinations. They visited most of the Canadian provinces and Northern United States, stopping along the way to see whatever caught their eyes. Summer trips to the East Coast were a time to relax with family and friends.
Doug is best known for his great sense of humour, sharp wit and kind heart. He was someone that people would immediately want to have as a friend as he was an intelligent, but very goofy guy who loved to have fun and make people laugh.
The family would like to thank the dedicated staff at Pembina Place Personal Care Home for all their kindness and care while looking after Doug over the past couple of years.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 20, 2019 at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd. Reception to follow. A private family interment will take place at Glen Lawn Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society, Diabetes Association or Alzheimer Association.
