Obituary announcement for old comrade Jim Burns

James "Jim" Burns, of Fredericton, NB, passed peacefully in his sleep at his home on the 31st day of May, 2017.  Born on May 21, 1938 in New Liskeard, ON, he was the son of the late George and Hilda (Pratt) Burns and husband of the late Theresa Burns.
On May 21st, 1954 James M.G. Burns began his Naval Career at HMCS Carleton, Ottawa, ON and served on several ships including HMCS, Cramby, Stadacona, Cornwallis, Haida, MicMac and Sioux. In September, 1961 he joined the Royal Canadian Army in the Corps of Signals. He continued his distinguished career as Detachment Commander of Comm Squads at Kingston, ON, Moosonee, ON, Chatham, NB and Camp Debert, NS. After retiring from the Canadian Army in 1980, Jim was enrolled and commissioned Captian, serving as Commanding Officer of 875 Antigonish Lions Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron, until 1990, and was also District Commander Royal Canadian Legion Zone #5. His dedication to his comrades continued to his last breath as Service Officer to Royal Canadian Legion Branch #4, Fredericton, NB. Throughout his life, he received many well deserved honours and awards. He was the city of Fredericton's unsung hero in 2012.
Jim loved painting with oils, sketching, calligraphy, and enjoyed being a member of the Fredericton Society of Artists.
Jim is survived by an estranged son; his daughter, Katheryn Burns (Calgary, AB); grandchildren, Justin, Amanda, Ashten and Ava; great-granddaughters, Kiara Elizabeth and Isabella Katheryn; sister-in-law, Pauline; nephews, George (Nadia) and Robert (Calgary, AB); nieces, Lisa, Bonnie-Lynn and Tina (Edmonton, AB).
In addition to his parents and spouse, Jim was predeceased by his sister, Margaret (Jim) as well as his brother, George.
There will be no visitation by Jim's request. The Royal Canadian Legion Branch # 4 will be holding a tribute service on Thursday, June 8 at 7 PM at McAdam's Funeral Home, immediately followed by a Memorial Service in the J.A. McAdam Memorial Chapel with Rev. Lisa Greenwood officiating. A reception will be held following the service at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch # 4, 199 Queen St, Fredericton, NB.
